Memo on Discovery of Korean BW Agent
Item Details
Title
Memo on Discovery of Korean BW Agent
Topics
This memo notes that a sample poison powder has been contaminating water supplies near soldier bivouac areas. The poison is sent to Camp Detrick, a U.S. BW Installation, and a medical laboratory in Tokyo for further identification and analysis.
Date
1950
Conclusions
Camp Detrick and the medical lab confirm that the powder is an enemy BW agent, not a chemical powder. The powder causes severe intestinal disorders and is highly neurotoxic. The material of the poison is 90% carbohydrate, like a starch, and this material is inoculated with intestinal bacilli that use the starch for nutrients to feed off of and multiply. The powder cannot be destroyed using a normal chlorine treatment, and instead requires 30 minutes of boiling to be destroyed.
