Countering Bioterrorism: The Role of Science and Technology

Item Details

Title

Countering Bioterrorism: The Role of Science and Technology

Topics

This report summarizes the shortcomings of US preparedness for a bioterrorist attack and makes recommendations.

Date

2002

Conclusions

The 2001 anthrax attacks should serve as a wake up call and motivate the reinforcement of the US public health system which has decayed since the conquering of certain infectious diseases. Preparedness is necessary for combatting both bioterrorism and the threat posed by emerging antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. While certain agents could be prioritized, true preparedness is to be prepared for the unknown.
