Progress Report on "X" Toxoid

Item Details

Title

Progress Report on "X" Toxoid

Topics

This is a report on the Surgeon Generals views on the deployment of "X" toxoid to American troops after the Director General of the Canadian Medical services recommended it for their own.

Date

1944

Conclusions

This report on toxoid "X" (botulinum toxin) concludes that Canada strongly recommends its use as although its effectiveness is unknown, the risk of the toxin is so high that any potential effectiveness is worth it. Background data is then presented from US sources about the viability of this plan, which generally cites potential for "X" toxoid in protection, but downplays the usefulness. Namely, there is not much available immediately and limited trials have shown anti-toxin generation, albeit with quickly waning immunity.
