Chemical and Biological Defense for US Forces

Item Details

Title

Chemical and Biological Defense for US Forces

Topics

The Subcommittees on Military Procurement and on Military Research and Development met to discuss the threat posed to US forces by chemical and biological weapons proliferation and their ability to fight on the battlefield under the threat of their use.

Date

1999

Conclusions

Further research and development is needed in broad-spectrum treatments for biological agents as mass vaccination is not feasible or practical when there is such a range of agents for an enemy to choose from. However, the anthrax vaccine could offer protection to troops from the most probable agent. There is also serious concern about the spread of biological weapons capabilities following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Biopreparat.
